Notes of a Binge Thinker

Thoughts from NTLP's Executive Director

Be a Member of the Binge Thinking Collective!

Hi.  Today, I am proud to announce a new chapter in the Notes of a Binge Thinker:  the Binge Thinking Collective (BTC).  The BTC is an attempt for me to include you in my binge thinking experiments.  I explain my rationale here.   In short, I will be posing a question to the BTC on a weekly basis and asking them to help me brainstorm on the topic.

This week, I am asking BTC members to read the following article on the 15 myths of dieting.  I am on weight watchers right now so I clicked on it to see if I would learn anything new(I did!) and it got me thinking about what myths exist about the library today.  What does our Society believe about the library that is simply not true any longer?  What are the myths?

Here is mine:  “The only thing you can do at the library is check out books so what good is it if you can’t do that.”  I am sure anyone who reads my columns or blogs on a regular basis was not too surprised by my myth.

Now it is your turn BTC!  What are some other myths about the library?  (For my Tweeter BTC members, you can do it in 140 characters or less if it would make you feel more comfortable.)

  2. 1)Libraries are quiet places where you can hear a pin drop. 2)Only kids, elderly and students doing research use the library. 3)If you don’t understand the dewey decimal system you cannot find anything.

  3. The first myth that popped into my head is that libraries are just for children. There have been many times that I ask someone if they use their library, and they say no, I don’t have any kids – why would I??

  4. Myth: It has to include hardcopy materials, esp. books, if it’s really a library.
Myth: I don’t need a public library because I buy the books I need.
Myth: Anyone can manage a library well, and no one needs more than very basic training to provide appropriate library services.

  5. Myth: Librarians know everything.
Myth: The library is a safe place to leave young children unattended.
Myth: Libraries don’t carry popular materials.
Myth: Librarians get to read a lot during their work day.
